Renton, WA rockery wall build.

“I hired Angel and his team to build a retaining wall with drainage to stabilize our backyard and collect rainwater from neighbors who all channeled their water to us. Angel gave us a free quote that was ~2x cheaper than the next quote.

The quality of work is great, all chipped blocks were discarded instead of being put into the wall, and the wall is very aesthetically pleasing. The steps are also great, everything is very sturdy. They also fixed some broken drainage that was improperly sloped, and I just verified in the most recent rain we got that the drain is working much faster than before.

They also left my yard cleaned up and without any trash, which I really respect and value. They also listened to all questions/concerns I had and were very accommodating.

I found Angel based on all of the 5 star reviews, and thought no way could a business have all 5s. But it’s true, Angel deserves all 5 stars and more. His team took good care of me at a great price, and delivered an awesome job. I know who to call for future rock projects now!”

The Retaining Wall Worries We Hear Most — and How We Put Them to Rest

weather icon

Built to Last in Renton's Climate

The Problem
Walls fail because contractors skip proper drainage, use cheap materials, or don’t account for Renton’s soil conditions and terrain.

How We Handle It

Renton sits at the convergence of hillside neighborhoods like the Highlands and low-lying areas along the Cedar River — meaning soil conditions shift dramatically from one property to the next. Clay-heavy hillside soils retain moisture and swell under pressure, while valley properties deal with high water tables and seasonal saturation.

Every wall we build includes drainage engineered for your specific site conditions — so water has somewhere to go before it becomes a problem.

Proper Engineering & Permitting

The Problem
Contractors unfamiliar with Renton codes build walls that don’t meet structural requirements or skip permits altogether.

How We Handle It

We know Renton’s permitting requirements inside and out. The city requires permits for walls over 4 feet, and properties near the Cedar River, steep slopes, or designated sensitive areas often require additional geotechnical review that many contractors aren’t prepared for.

We coordinate with licensed engineers or put you in touch with them to help with the process. No shortcuts, no surprises.

Local Knowledge, Built-In

We build retaining walls across Renton’s most varied terrain — from steep hillside lots in the Highlands and Kennydale to Cedar River valley properties dealing with high water tables and chronic drainage issues. Each area has its own soil, slope, and drainage challenges, and our team has decades of experience engineering walls that handle Renton’s conditions.

In Renton, Drainage & Water Management is the Whole Job

Renton sits at the base of a drainage basin. Between the hills above, the Cedar River corridor, and some of the heaviest sustained rainfall in King County, the ground here  stays wet. For retaining walls, that’s the real test.

Most wall failures in Renton are drainage failures. Water builds up behind the wall, saturates the soil, and creates hydrostatic pressure that no amount of rock or block can resist indefinitely.

Here's what proper drainage looks like

> Perforated pipe and gravel backfill placed directly behind the wall to capture and redirect groundwater before pressure builds

> French drain systems where groundwater volume or uphill runoff requires a more robust solution

> Downspout routing assessment — if a roof drain is discharging anywhere near your wall, that has to be part of the plan

> Outlet placement that moves water away from the wall base and your neighbor’s property

You'll Always Know What's Being Built and Why

A retaining wall is a significant investment, one you’ll live with for decades.

Because Rainier Rockeries is owner-led, Angel is the one walking your property, running the estimate, and building the wall. When you have a question, you’re talking to the person with the answer.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

> We explain the “why” behind every recommendation. Wall type, materials, footing depth, drainage approach — you’ll understand what we’re building and why it’s the right fit for your specific slope, soil, and site conditions before we break ground.

> We design for your property, not a template. Renton has real variation, flat lots near the valley floor, steep hillsides above the Highlands, older neighborhoods with settled soil. Every estimate we give is built around what we actually see on your site.

> We answer technical questions directly. Drainage, load capacity, long-term maintenance, what to watch for in five years — ask us anything. You’ll get straight answers from Angel.

> Everything is in writing. Before work begins, you’ll have a clear contract that spells out scope, materials, timeline, and warranty terms. No surprises, no fine print.

Retaining Wall Case Study

Renton, WA Backyard

Renton block wall with steps.
Renton block wall.

The Challenge

This Renton homeowner had a backyard drainage problem that wasn’t just their own — neighboring properties had been channeling runoff directly onto their lot for years, saturating the soil and destabilizing the yard. They needed a retaining wall with an integrated drainage system that could handle the combined water load, not just their own. After paying for other contractor quotes, they were bracing for a significant bill.

Our Approach

Angel came out and provided a free quote that came in roughly half the price of the next competing bid — without cutting corners to get there. Work included building the retaining wall with steps, but also diagnosing and correcting an existing drainage system that had been improperly sloped, a problem most contractors would have ignored or missed entirely.

Throughout the project, Angel’s team held to a standard that showed in the details: chipped or damaged blocks were set aside rather than placed into the wall. Every question and concern the homeowner raised was addressed directly — nothing was dismissed as infeasible. The yard was left clean when the job was done.

The Results

The homeowner got a structurally sound retaining wall with integrated steps, built from materials that passed Angel’s own quality standard. More importantly, the drainage is working — confirmed during the next rain event, draining noticeably faster than before. The compounding runoff problem that had plagued the yard for years was resolved in a single project, on budget, with no surprises.

"Angel gave us a free quote that was about 2X cheaper than the next quote. The quality of work is great, all chipped blocks were discarded instead of being put into the wall. Angel and his team also fixed some broken drainage that was improperly sloped, and I just verified in the most recent rain that the drain is working much faster than before."

Word of Mouth is Our Business Model

Rainier Rockeries has grown entirely through word of mouth and our work that holds up. That’s the business model, and it only works if we earn it on every job.

That means if something isn’t right, we want to know. A concern during the project, a question after the wall is done, feedback about how we communicated — we don’t shy away from any of it. Angel built this company to last, and that requires being honest about where there’s room to improve.
