The Retaining Wall Worries We Hear Most — and How We Put Them to Rest

Built to Last in Federal Way's Climate

The Problem
Walls fail because contractors skip proper drainage, use cheap materials, or don’t account for Federal Way’s soil conditions and terrain.

How We Handle It
Federal Way’s western neighborhoods sit on Puget Sound bluffs where saturated glacial soils and steep elevation changes put serious pressure on retaining walls every wet season.

Every wall we build includes engineered drainage designed for these conditions. We design every wall with drainage that works with your property’s slope and soil so water has somewhere to go before it becomes a problem.

Proper Engineering & Permitting

The Problem
Contractors unfamiliar with Federal Way codes build walls that don’t meet structural requirements or skip permits altogether..

How We Handle It
We know Federal Way’s permitting requirements inside and out. The city requires permits for walls over 4 feet, and any property within 25 feet of a slope of 40% or greater triggers Federal Way’s Environmentally Critical Areas ordinance — requiring geotechnical reports most contractors aren’t prepared to handle.

We coordinate with licensed engineers or put you in touch with them to help with the process. No shortcuts, no surprises.

The Problem

The Challenge

This Bellevue homeowner needed a two-tiered retaining wall spanning 25 feet on a sloped property with limited working conditions. The project required careful timing — starting excavation in wet fall weather risked an unstable wall base. Other contractors had quoted the job as manual labor, which would have meant more time on-site, higher labor costs, and greater disruption to the property.

Our Approach

Angel visited the property within the week to assess the site and provide a quote. Unlike competing bids, Rainier Rockeries came prepared to bring an excavator — cutting project time significantly without cutting corners.

Work began exactly as scheduled in early November. When wet weather created a delay, Angel communicated proactively rather than pushing forward on a compromised base. Throughout the build, Angel was on-site daily to ensure the project matched what was agreed. When a mid-project opportunity came up to add steps down the side of the wall, Angel paused, presented the idea to the homeowner, and got their input before proceeding. The job stayed on budget — Angel absorbed additional costs rather than surprise the homeowner with change orders.

The Results

The homeowner received a finished two-tiered retaining wall built on a properly prepared base, with integrated steps that added both function and character to the space. The project was completed on time, on budget, and with zero surprise charges — including fill dirt, extra blocks, and tree stump removal. Clear communication throughout meant the homeowner always knew what was happening and why.

"They are straightforward, fair, and transparent. The work they do is excellent. They show up on time and on budget. Communication is excellent, a rarity for contractors."

This was our first time doing hardscape work, and Angel kept us informed with regular check‑ins and clear communication. I originally planned to tackle this project myself. Still, I didn’t have the time, so it was a huge relief to know exactly what his plan was and to be updated immediately if anything unexpected came up. We get constant compliments on the finished work. Angel is professional, takes pride in what he does, and it shows in the quality of the results.”
