The Retaining Wall Worries We Hear Most — and How We Put Them to Rest
Built to Last in Federal Way's Climate
The Problem
Walls fail because contractors skip proper drainage, use cheap materials, or don’t account for Federal Way’s soil conditions and terrain.
How We Handle It
Federal Way’s western neighborhoods sit on Puget Sound bluffs where saturated glacial soils and steep elevation changes put serious pressure on retaining walls every wet season.
Every wall we build includes engineered drainage designed for these conditions. We design every wall with drainage that works with your property’s slope and soil so water has somewhere to go before it becomes a problem.
Proper Engineering & Permitting
The Problem
Contractors unfamiliar with Federal Way codes build walls that don’t meet structural requirements or skip permits altogether..
How We Handle It
We know Federal Way’s permitting requirements inside and out. The city requires permits for walls over 4 feet, and any property within 25 feet of a slope of 40% or greater triggers Federal Way’s Environmentally Critical Areas ordinance — requiring geotechnical reports most contractors aren’t prepared to handle.
We coordinate with licensed engineers or put you in touch with them to help with the process. No shortcuts, no surprises.
Proven Local Experience in Federal Way
The Problem
Limited experience with Federal Way terrain, no local references, or work subcontracted to unknown crews.
How We Handle It
20+ years of combined experience building retaining walls across Federal Way and South King County — from the bluff properties in Marine Hills and Twin Lakes to established neighborhoods near Steel Lake and Dash Point.
Our team does the work, we don’t subcontract. Check our customer reviews and see examples of walls we’ve built in Federal Way neighborhoods.
Clear Communication & Timelines
The Problem
Contractors who go silent, show up unpredictably, or leave you guessing about progress.
How We Handle It
You get an upfront timeline fom Angel, the owner, before work begins. He communicates throughout the project and gives you updates at each phase. You’ll always know what’s happening and when. Meet Angel your direct point of contact.
Fully Protected
The Problem
Unlicensed contractors, no insurance coverage, zero warranties if something goes wrong.
How We Handle It
Fully licensed, bonded, and insured. We stand behind our work with warranties on both labor and materials. If there’s ever an issue, we make it right.
Care and Support
The Problem
The job ends and you’re on your own — no guidance on maintenance, no follow-up if issues arise.
How We Handle It
We walk you through drainage maintenance and erosion control after installation. And if you ever have questions or concerns down the road, we’re here.

Our Customers Say It Best
Why Choose the Rainier Rockeries Team?
> Reliable
“ Another company built our retaining wall and in less than a year it was sinking. Angel and his crew were the only ones willing to help us.
He owns his equipment. It was always in working order and well maintained.
He and his crew were on time everyday and worked 6 days a week. It took him just 2 weeks to do the job. He had to completely take down the old wall and rebuild it from the beginning.
I can’t say enough good about Rainier Rockeriers. In fact we hired them again for a second project. “
– Laurie U.
> Communication
“ Rainier Rockeris provided an amazing finished product for our retaining wall and driveway.
Angel called us every day during the project to update us and talk through what was going to happen for that day.
The communication was excellent and they were willing to work with us on small details to make the project match my vision.“
– John H.

“ The level of detail in their proposal, the amazing photos of completed projects Angel showed us, and his depth of experience made all the difference.
Like any construction project, there were decision points along the way, and Angel’s experience really shined. He offered thoughtful recommendations while always leaving the final call up to us.
Now, we have an incredible backyard that looks fantastic and is built to last for years to come. “
– Blair E.

Two-Tiered Retaining Wall Case Study
Bellevue, WA Backyard
The Challenge
This Bellevue homeowner needed a two-tiered retaining wall spanning 25 feet on a sloped property with limited working conditions. The project required careful timing — starting excavation in wet fall weather risked an unstable wall base. Other contractors had quoted the job as manual labor, which would have meant more time on-site, higher labor costs, and greater disruption to the property.
Our Approach
Angel visited the property within the week to assess the site and provide a quote. Unlike competing bids, Rainier Rockeries came prepared to bring an excavator — cutting project time significantly without cutting corners.
Work began exactly as scheduled in early November. When wet weather created a delay, Angel communicated proactively rather than pushing forward on a compromised base. Throughout the build, Angel was on-site daily to ensure the project matched what was agreed. When a mid-project opportunity came up to add steps down the side of the wall, Angel paused, presented the idea to the homeowner, and got their input before proceeding. The job stayed on budget — Angel absorbed additional costs rather than surprise the homeowner with change orders.
The Results
The homeowner received a finished two-tiered retaining wall built on a properly prepared base, with integrated steps that added both function and character to the space. The project was completed on time, on budget, and with zero surprise charges — including fill dirt, extra blocks, and tree stump removal. Clear communication throughout meant the homeowner always knew what was happening and why.
"They are straightforward, fair, and transparent. The work they do is excellent. They show up on time and on budget. Communication is excellent, a rarity for contractors."

Behind-the-Scenes: Backyard Transformation in Federal Way, WA
Take a peek behind the scenes at a recent backyard transformation in Federal Way, WA. Our crew tackled block wall construction, custom steps and risers — making a spacious, polished outdoor space the homeowners can actually enjoy.
"Angel and his team did an amazing job on our property. We had two retaining walls and a large paver patio installed, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. This was our first time doing hardscape work, and Angel kept us informed with regular check‑ins and clear communication. I originally planned to tackle this project myself. Still, I didn’t have the time, so it was a huge relief to know exactly what his plan was and to be updated immediately if anything unexpected came up. We get constant compliments on the finished work. Angel is professional, takes pride in what he does, and it shows in the quality of the results.”
