“Angel did a fantastic job with our land clearing and grading project! We were super impressed with his professionalism, responsiveness and speed. His bobcat worker is a virtuoso, a project that looked like it would take a week was done in less than two days(!)

Angel went above and beyond at every step to give us a reasonable and accurate quote, answer all of our questions and then fracking nailed it as soon as we hired him!

I highly recommend Angel for any landscaping projects, impressive!”

The Retaining Wall Worries We Hear Most — and How We Put Them to Rest

Built to Last in Mercer Island's Climate

The Problem

Walls fail because contractors skip proper drainage, use cheap materials, or don’t account for Mercer Island’s unique island conditions.

How We Handle It

Mercer Island is surrounded by Lake Washington, which means moisture comes from every direction. Shoreline lots deal with high water tables year-round, while hillside properties face runoff that accelerates through steep, narrow lots. Soil stays wet longer here than on the mainland, and that constant saturation is what breaks down walls over time.

Every wall we build includes drainage engineered for your specific site conditions, so water has somewhere to go before it becomes a problem.

Proper Engineering & Permitting

The Problem

Contractors unfamiliar with Mercer Island codes build walls that don’t meet structural requirements or skip permits altogether.

How We Handle It

We know Mercer Island’s permitting requirements inside and out. The city requires permits for walls over 4 feet, and the island’s steep lots, shoreline proximity, and critical area designations mean many projects require additional geotechnical review that most contractors aren’t prepared for.

We coordinate with licensed engineers or put you in touch with them to help with the process. No shortcuts, no surprises.

Our team does the work, we don’t subcontract. Check our customer reviews and see examples of walls we’ve built on the island.

Mercer Island by the Numbers

38 inches

of rain per year

An island surrounded by lake water, hit by constant rain, with nowhere for moisture to go but through your soil and against your walls.

$2.3M

median home value

A failing wall puts one of the most valuable residential properties in King County at risk.

1973

median year homes were built

Over half of Mercer Island’s retaining walls are 50+ years old. Most were built before modern drainage standards existed.

Local Knowledge, Built-In

We build retaining walls across every part of the island. From mid-century properties in First Hill and Island Crest with original rockery walls showing their age, to waterfront lots in Shorewood and South Point where slope and lake proximity create year-round drainage pressure.

No two sites on Mercer Island are the same, and our team has decades of experience reading the conditions before we recommend a solution.

On an Island This Small, Every Job Is a Reference

Mercer Island is 6 square miles and 25,000 people. There’s no blending in. A retaining wall that fails gets noticed, and so does one that’s built right. That’s why we treat every project on the island like our reputation depends on it, because on Mercer Island, it does.

We've Built Walls on This Island, Not Just Nearby

Island conditions are different. The soil holds moisture longer, slopes drain toward the lake from every direction, and access on residential streets requires planning that mainland sites don’t. We’ve worked on Mercer Island and we understand what it takes to build here.

You Work Directly with Angel, Start to Finish

Angel is your point of contact from the initial site visit through final walkthrough. He evaluates the site, recommends the approach, and oversees the build. One person, one crew, full accountability throughout the project.

Built to Last Another 50 Years

Many of the walls we replace on Mercer Island were originally built in the 1950s and 60s without proper drainage, backfill, or structural design. The replacement should outlast them. We use engineered drainage systems, structural backfill, and block or rock systems selected for your site’s specific soil and water conditions. Every decision is made with long-term performance in mind.

We Respect What's Already There

Mercer Island properties often have mature landscaping, established gardens, and finished outdoor spaces that took years to build. We plan access routes, stage materials carefully, and protect the parts of your property we’re not working on. The goal is a wall that looks like it belongs, built without disrupting everything around it.

We Know Mercer Island's Permitting Process

Mercer Island has its own municipal code, critical area regulations, and shoreline management rules. Walls over 4 feet need permits, and many island properties trigger additional review based on slope, proximity to the water, or sensitive area designations. We know what’s required and coordinate with licensed engineers to keep your project moving smoothly.

Our Customers Say It Best

Why Choose the Rainier Rockeries Team?

> Reliable

Another company built our retaining wall and in less than a year it was sinking. Angel and his crew were the only ones willing to help us.

He owns his equipment. It was always in working order and well maintained.

He and his crew were on time everyday and worked 6 days a week. It took him just 2 weeks to do the job. He had to completely take down the old wall and rebuild it from the beginning.

I can’t say enough good about Rainier Rockeriers. In fact we hired them again for a second project.

– Laurie U.

Like any construction project, there were decision points along the way, and Angel’s experience really shined. He offered thoughtful recommendations while always leaving the final call up to us.

Now, we have an incredible backyard that looks fantastic and is built to last for years to come.

– Blair E.

> Care

The crew was punctual, respectful of our property, and maintained a clean and organized worksite throughout the project. It’s clear they take great pride in their work, and it shows in the finished product.
– A.L.

” They were careful and efficient in their work, and willing to answer any questions we had throughout the process. They were also extremely conscientious of neighbors on our narrow street, including kids who stopped to watch the work being done.

Retaining Wall Case Study

Block wall with Integrated Drainage

Renton block wall with steps.
Renton block wall.

The Challenge

This homeowner had a backyard drainage problem that wasn’t just their own — neighboring properties had been channeling runoff directly onto their lot for years, saturating the soil and destabilizing the yard. They needed a retaining wall with an integrated drainage system that could handle the combined water load, not just their own. After paying for other contractor quotes, they were bracing for a significant bill.

Our Approach

Angel came out and provided a free quote that came in roughly half the price of the next competing bid — without cutting corners to get there. Work included building the retaining wall with steps, but also diagnosing and correcting an existing drainage system that had been improperly sloped, a problem most contractors would have ignored or missed entirely.

Throughout the project, Angel’s team held to a standard that showed in the details: chipped or damaged blocks were set aside rather than placed into the wall. Every question and concern the homeowner raised was addressed directly — nothing was dismissed as infeasible. The yard was left clean when the job was done.

The Results

The homeowner got a structurally sound retaining wall with integrated steps, built from materials that passed Angel’s own quality standard. More importantly, the drainage is working — confirmed during the next rain event, draining noticeably faster than before. The compounding runoff problem that had plagued the yard for years was resolved in a single project, on budget, with no surprises.

"Angel gave us a free quote that was about 2X cheaper than the next quote. The quality of work is great, all chipped blocks were discarded instead of being put into the wall. Angel and his team also fixed some broken drainage that was improperly sloped, and I just verified in the most recent rain that the drain is working much faster than before."

Word of Mouth is Our Business Model

Rainier Rockeries has grown entirely through word of mouth and our work that holds up. That’s the business model, and it only works if we earn it on every job.

That means if something isn’t right, we want to know. A concern during the project, a question after the wall is done, feedback about how we communicated, we don’t shy away from any of it. Angel built this company to last, and that requires being honest about where there’s room to improve.

And if your experience with us was a good one, we’d love to hear that too. Reviews from Mercer Island homeowners help other neighbors in the area know who they can trust before they pick up the phone. It takes two minutes and it really makes a difference for a small, owner-run business like ours.
